William A. Hipp Scholarship

MBAA is Honored to Fund and Sponsor the William A. Hipp Scholarship! Learn More About Bill and Find Out Why.

Bill Hipp was a third generation master brewer at the C. Schmidt & Sons brewery in Philadelphia, a legacy that began when his grandfather was hired as brewmaster. Bill, his father and his grandfather all held the office of President of District Philadelphia, Master Brewers Association of the Americas (MBAA) during their careers.

Bill graduated from Pennsylvania State University with a B.S. degree in agricultural and biological chemistry in 1940 and joined Schmidt's as an apprentice brewer. His tenure was interrupted for three years when he served in the Army Chemical Corps during World War II. He returned to brewing in 1943, and three years later joined the MBAA, when he was promoted to assistant brewmaster and brewery safety director.

After graduating from the Wallerstein School of Brewing in New York City, Bill became Schmidt's brewmaster in 1956 and their production manager in 1959. In 1962, he became vice president in charge of production for Schmidt's breweries in Philadelphia, Norristown, NJ, and Cleveland.

As a contributor to the MBAA's Technical Quarterly, a scientific journal for brewers, Bill began the "Novel Idea" column in which he solicited brewers from around the country to share information they found to have application in the brewery. Bill also established a partnership program with Drexel Institute of Technology (now Drexel University) to involve students in learning experiences at Schmidt's. He mentored a great number of aspiring brewers, many of whom are still working at major companies all over the brewing industry.

At the MBAA national level, Bill was chair of the membership committee, as well as the technical committee. Bill was elected MBAA President and served in that office in 1978 and 1979. In 1980, Bill was the first recipient of the MBAA's Award of Honor. Even after his retirement in 1982, Bill was active on the MBAA's Board of Directors, serving as Treasurer from 1987 until 1995.

To honor Bill, the national MBAA, along with MBAA District Philadelphia, created the William A. Hipp Scholarship, which is awarded twice annually to MBAA members who wish to further their education at either the MBAA Brewing and Malting Science Course or the MBAA Brewery Packaging Technology Course.
